January Cricket Green Update published

This month’s news includes:
- Merton Council Planning Committee to decide on future of Mitcham Village on 26 February when monolithic 11 storey block on Majestic Way set to be either given the go-ahead or refused. Mitcham Society, St Marks Church, three local schools, Tree Wardens and Mitcham Cricket Green Community & Heritage as well as local residents have all come out in opposition.
- In a demonstration of the level of anxiety about the plans the heads of St Mark’s Academy, St Marks Primary School and St Thomas Canterbury schools have come together to express: “serious concerns about the sheer size of the proposed development, immediately overlooking the playground at St Mark’s Primary School. We currently have a wonderful village feel — very rare in London — where our children can feel safe, play comfortably and enjoy natural light and fresh air. The prospect of an 11-storey building, adjacent to our site, is very worrying. There is likely to be wind tunnelling, overshadowing, as well as potential safeguarding concerns with the playground being very much overlooked. The feel will likely be completely over-bearing, over-dominating and without a doubt affect the mood of the area. The children, we are sure, will be unnerved by such a modern and vast building dominating over our late Victorian school building.”
