Our Civic Day walk on 21 June a great success

Thanks to everyone who joined us on 21 June for our Civic Day walk.

We marked Civic Day this year with a visit to the Cricket Pavilion and a walk around the greens and open spaces of Cricket Green, giving local people a chance to talk about and make input to two Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) bids being prepared by Merton Council:

  • Parks for People. This bid will focus on Canons house and grounds, and will be aimed at encouraging more people to use the area, finding a use for Canons house and understanding what makes the area special.
  • Townscape Heritage. This bid will focus on Cricket Green, London Road and Church Road. It is based around key buildings such as the Cricket Pavilion and Burn Bullock, and the ‘streetscape’.

If successful these bids could bring millions of pounds into the area.

We are working closely with the project manager, who is employed by Merton Council, as well as with the Mitcham Society, Friends of the Canons and Mitcham Cricket Club, to help these bids be a success.

There is still time to have your say on the bids – but be quick – the consultation period has technically come to an end. Squeeze your response in by filling in the response form at the bid web site http://www.canonspartnership.org.uk

Conversion of Brook House into flats

The owner of Brook House on Cricket Green has plans to convert the currently empty office block into 21 flats.

The plan is made possible by national government rules that allow the owners of offices to convert them into accommodation with very limited controls by local authorities.

We have commented on the proposal urging Merton Council to require a parking plan, ensure that the main access route is not along Cricket Green road and not allow external lighting which would be detrimental to the Cricket Green Conservation Area.

Winter 2014 Bulletin published

We’ve published our latest Bulletin, which is now being distributed to homes around the Cricket Green area by our volunteers.

In this issue you can learn more about our exciting Heritage Lottery Funded project to clean the horse trough at Cricket Green and move it back from the kerb into a safer position. The work to remove the horse trough will take place over the coming week, so watch out for it happening as you pass by.

Also in this issue there are articles on:

  • our successes in adding to the local list – protecting local structures
  • the shock development of a floodlit sports pitch on the Canons area – and yes, we are STILL waiting for an adequate response from our councillors on why they have not stood up for Cricket Green
  • Action we are taking to secure the future of the fire station on Cricket Green once the London Fire Brigade move to a new fire station
  • And much more

Cricket Green Charter published

We launched the Cricket Green Charter at the Mitcham Community Forum on 15 April.

This was developed through the Tune In Cricket Green workshop with local residents, organised in partnership with Merton Council and our local ward councilors.  The full report of the workshop is now available and can be downloaded here

The 21 point Charter sets out our ambitions for the future of Cricket Green for the first time.  We want it to be used to guide all future policies and planning decisions.

The rich story of Cricket Green told through its buildings, open spaces and people should set the standard and makes development in the area a privilege.

The Charter asks that all development is required to show how it matches up to the quality of Cricket Green and contributes positively to its future. We look forward to working with Merton Council and others to bring it to life.

You can read the Cricket Green Charter here.

Tune In To Cricket Green event was a great success

More than 50 local people came along to our Tune In To Cricket Green event on 7th March in the Vestry Hall.

This was jointly organised by Mitcham Cricket Green Community and Heritage and Merton Council.

There was lots of lively discussion about what people like about the area and what they want to change.

We talked about a number of key potential development sites including the Fire Station (which will become vacant when the Fire Brigade decamp for new facilities near Mitcham tram stop), the Cricketers Pub (subject of three planning applications for flats all turned down on appeal), Worsfold House and surrounding open space, the Canons area, the Wilson Hospital  and Birches Close.

Local people expressed strong views about what they did – and did not – want to happen in and around Cricket Green. Ideas ranged from new hotels, an arts centre, housing and efforts to tackle lorries and other traffic. There was strong appreciation for the historic character and open spaces of this much loved area.

All three Cricket Green Ward Councillors took part in the event, as did key staff from the futureMerton team. Cabinet member Andrew Judge also attended.

There will be a full write up of this event available soon. We’ll publish it here, so watch this space. There are some photos here. This will be used to help Merton Council understand how the local community wants to see Cricket Green change in the future.

We would like to thank futureMerton for its support in helping to run this event.
